How to leave a bequest in three easy steps

Your decision to leave a gift in your Will is the biggest way you could help to contribute to the future safety of beach goers. It is a simple process that could make a world of difference.

Step 1 If you do not have a Will, then the first thing you need to do is obtain independent legal advice on creating one. If you do not have a solicitor, simply contact the Public Trustee in your state.

Step 2 During one’s life many people revisit their Will. Has your situation changed since you made your last Will? It may be a wedding, the addition of children, an overseas trip, a change in your relationship or grandchildren coming along. Whatever your age, if you are changing your Will this is the perfect time to add a bequest clause.

Step 3 If you do have a Will, then all you need to do is add a codicil – a short legal amendment to your existing Will.

We realise that leaving a bequest to the Surf Life Saving Foundation in your Will is an important decision that will require a lot of consideration. To help you with your decision, please read our Guide to Wills and Legacies for more information including the type of legacies available and also suggested wording for your Will.

Alternatively, if you would like to speak to someone from Surf Life Saving personally about your decision, please email bequests@slsfoundation.com.au or call 1800 642 925 and ask to speak with our Supporter Relationships Manager.
