In September 2009, The Grant Seeking Unit (GSU) was established as a national grant research and writing support unit for Surf Life Saving entities across Australia. The GSU's main focus is to
research appropriate grant opportunities from private trusts and foundations and relevant government agencies. The initial priority has been primarily on the identification of new opportunities for
National and State entities, however late in the financial year, the GSU, in coordination with State entities, provided grant writing support and grant seeking advice to a number of Surf Life Saving Clubs.
The GSU has enabled SLS clubs throughout Australia to gain equipment that otherwise would have taken some time to acquire as well as providing seed funding for new state run programs and initiatives.
