We are very proud that Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) volunteer surf lifesavers will be taking part in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the XXI Commonwealth Games this year.
Hundreds of surf lifesavers have already been cast to perform a specific role in the Opening Ceremony − welcoming the athletes of the Commonwealth to the Gold Coast.
The Opening Ceremony will take place on the 4th of April. It’s a momentous day for the Gold Coast as we welcome thousands of fans, athletes and officials. It’s also an exciting and once-ina-
lifetime opportunity for SLSQ and our members. Volunteers ranging in age from 16 to 75 and from diverse backgrounds will be representing Queensland and our iconic surf culture and community, all in the spirt of the Commonwealth Games. “We’re thrilled to be involved in the Opening Ceremony,” said President Mark Fife OAM.
“It’s a great opportunity to highlight the lifesaving work of our volunteers and help show international tourists coming into the Gold Coast about how to stay safe on the beach. We’re expecting a significant influx in beachgoers throughout the Games and, hopefully after this, they’ll recognise our surf lifesavers in their iconic red and yellow colours and know to stay safe by swimming between the flags,”
